Website performance monitoring tools

The five metrics a store owner actually needs at the start, four free data sources and a weekly check-list — without drowning in reports and jargon.

To understand whether an online store is working, a beginner only needs five numbers: traffic, traffic sources, conversion rate, bounce rate and load speed. Orders and visits are visible in the Turboshop admin panel, visitor behaviour in Google Analytics 4, search queries in Search Console, and speed in PageSpeed Insights. Every other metric is a distraction in month one.

Why a store owner needs website monitoring

A store without analytics is a store whose owner does not know how many people came in, where they came from and at which step they turned around. Decisions in that mode are made blindly: «the ads seem not to work», «the price is probably too high». Monitoring turns guesses into facts and, above all, protects a beginner's scarcest resource — the ad budget that otherwise drains into channels that bring no orders.

The second reason is reaction speed. If a page starts loading twice as slowly, a product drops out of search results or the order form breaks, you see it in falling metrics rather than learning about it two weeks later from an angry customer's email. Online store analytics is an early-warning system, not reporting for the sake of reporting.

Monitor with traffic charts — monitoring online store website performance

The five metrics to start with

  • Traffic. How many unique visitors arrive per day and per week. This is the base: without visitors there is neither conversion nor orders.
  • Traffic sources. Where people actually come from — search, ads, social media, direct visits, links from other sites. Shows which channel deserves investment.
  • Conversion rate. The share of visits that ended in an order. The store's key metric: it is what connects traffic to money.
  • Bounces and pages per visit. How many people leave from the very first page and how many pages the rest look at. Signals a mismatch with expectations: wrong product, wrong price, confusing page.
  • Load speed. How many seconds it takes for the page to become usable on a phone. Affects both conversion and search rankings.

These five are enough to see the whole picture: how many people arrived, from where, whether they stayed, whether they bought and whether the technical side got in their way. Everything else is a layer on top that only makes sense once the basics are stable and you understand how they behave week over week.

Where the data lives: four sources

The Turboshop admin panel

The first place worth checking daily is your own admin panel. Built-in analytics shows orders and visits with no third-party services and no setup. For a beginner this is the most convenient start: the data is already tied to your catalogue, so you see specific products and orders rather than abstract sessions. What else the platform can do is listed on the features page.

Google Analytics 4

GA4 answers the question «where did people come from and what did they do on the site». This is where you see the split by channel, behaviour on product pages and the path to the cart. The tracking code is added from the admin panel — no developer required, and the steps are covered in the instructions.

Google Search Console

Search Console is your store seen through the eyes of a search engine: which queries you appear for, how many clicks you get, which pages are indexed and where the errors are. It is a free source of ideas for content and assortment: queries with many impressions but almost no clicks usually mean the title or product description needs rewriting. How to work with search traffic systematically is covered in our SEO section.

PageSpeed Insights

The service checks the speed of a specific page on mobile and desktop and lists what is slowing it down. Do not test only the homepage: run a category page and a product page separately — that is where most visitors from search and ads land.

A metric only matters when there is an action behind it. If you do not know what you would do about a bad number, do not spend time tracking it.

How to read the reports and what to decide

Analytics starts working when every number is tied to a concrete step. These are the simplest pairings to begin with:

  • Almost no traffic. The problem is not the site — nobody knows it exists. The fix is your first ads, product listings in search and posts on social media. Looking at conversion here is pointless: across ten visits it means nothing.
  • Traffic but no orders. Find the step where people disappear: product page, cart or checkout. The usual causes are missing photos and descriptions, unclear shipping cost and too many fields in the form.
  • Many bounces on one page. Usually a gap between the promise and the content: the ad pointed at one product but the person landed in the general catalogue. Fixed with a landing page for that specific query.
  • One channel brings orders, another does not. Do not switch the «bad» channel off immediately — check whether there is enough data. But do not scale its budget before orders appear either.
  • Low speed on mobile. The first thing that helps is compressing your own product photos instead of uploading enormous images. It is the most common cause of slow pages in new stores.

What not to look at in the first month

The classic beginner mistake is to open a dozen reports and drown. In the first weeks you can deliberately ignore the complex metrics: cohort analysis, multi-channel funnels, attribution models, time-on-page down to the second, and any number built on a tiny sample. They are not wrong — they simply cannot give a statistically meaningful answer at first-month volumes, and they create the illusion of work.

Laptop and smartphone showing load speed metrics — website monitoring tools

The same goes for comparing yesterday with the day before every morning: daily traffic swings in a small store are normal and mean nothing. The minimum period for a conclusion is a week, and for judging an advertising channel — at least several weeks of running it.

Weekly check-list

  1. Compare this week's traffic and order count with last week's — you want the trend, not a single day.
  2. Check the split by source: has a channel disappeared, has a new one appeared.
  3. Look at conversion: up, down or holding at last week's level.
  4. Open Search Console: new indexing errors, queries with high impressions and low clicks.
  5. Run one product page through PageSpeed Insights — especially if you uploaded photos this week.
  6. Review the top landing pages: those are the ones worth improving first.
  7. Write down one conclusion and one action for next week. Without this step, monitoring becomes staring at charts.

It is also worth keeping a simple file or spreadsheet where the same few numbers land every week. After a month you will have your own history of results — and that, rather than someone else's market averages, becomes the benchmark: you will see exactly what changed after launching ads, publishing an article or reworking your product cards.

Frequently asked questions

How much do these tools cost?

Google Analytics 4, Search Console and PageSpeed Insights are free for any website.

Do I need a developer to connect everything?

No. Tracking codes are added from the store admin panel, Search Console ownership is verified the same way, and PageSpeed Insights needs no installation at all — you just paste the page address.

How often should I check the numbers?

Orders daily, everything else once a week using the check-list above. Reloading reports every day eats time and pushes you to react to random noise instead of systemic change.

What conversion rate is considered normal?

There is no universal figure: it depends on the niche, the price of the product and the traffic channel. So compare against your own trend rather than someone else's — this month's conversion against last month's with the same assortment and the same sources.

Monitoring does not require complicated services — it requires five metrics, the habit of checking them weekly and one action based on what you saw. Create a store on Turboshop, connect analytics from day one and make decisions on data rather than on gut feeling.
