Product page SEO: the basic principles

Product page SEO: the basic principles

A breakdown of every element of a product page: a title and description formula, H1 and body copy, image alt text, specs and filters as content, reviews, Product markup and internal links — plus the mistakes that most often kill rankings.

For a product page to rank in Google it needs: a unique title and description containing the product name, a single H1, a clean readable URL, your own description instead of the supplier's text, fully filled specifications, images with alt text, reviews and Product structured data. Below we go through every element in turn — and show which of them the platform handles for you automatically.

Why product pages are a store's main SEO pages

Queries like «buy {model name}» have low search volume individually, but together they make up the largest and most convertible traffic a store gets. The logic is simple: someone searching for a specific model with a specific part number has already finished choosing and is ready to buy. You do not need to explain anything to them — you only need to avoid getting in the way.

Category pages fight for high-volume queries where competition is fierce and positions take years to win. Product pages collect the long tail: hundreds and thousands of small queries, each worth a handful of visits, but adding up to the bulk of organic traffic. And this is exactly where careful stores win, because most competitors do not optimise product pages at all: they import the supplier's price list and consider the job done.

There is one more argument — shopping ads and aggregators. Product page data feeds the Google Merchant Center feed, and the more complete and accurate that data is, the better all your shopping advertising performs. Product optimisation pays off twice: in organic search and in paid channels.

Product page structure: what has to be on the page

Before touching the copy, check what the page actually contains. A complete product page in 2026 includes:

  • the product name as H1 — full, with brand and model
  • price, availability and delivery time — visible without scrolling
  • several quality photos from different angles, and video where it helps
  • a short «why this product» block — three to five points above the fold
  • a detailed description written by you, not copied
  • a fully completed specifications table
  • payment, shipping, warranty and return terms
  • reviews and customer questions
  • «similar products» and «frequently bought together» blocks
  • breadcrumbs up to the category and subcategory.

Gaps in this list are not merely «unfinished work». Every missing element either removes a relevance signal from the search engine or leaves the buyer without an answer to their question — after which they go and find that answer at a competitor.

Title and description: a formula that works

The title tag is the single most important piece of text on the page. A working template looks like this:

{Brand} {Model name} {key attribute} — buy online, price

For example: «Nike Air Max 90 men's sneakers — buy online, price». The template carries three signals at once: the exact name people search for, a commercial word, and a mention of price that lifts click-through rate. Keep the title within roughly 60 characters — Google simply truncates anything longer and the most important part may never appear in the visible snippet. So put the product name first and the tail at the end.

The description does not affect rankings directly, but it directly affects click-through rate, and that affects rankings. A formula for it:

{Product name} in stock. {Main benefit or difference}. {Delivery and warranty}. {Call to action}.

The optimal length is 150–160 characters. Write specifics instead of filler: not «a wide range and the best prices», but «genuine product, 12-month warranty, delivery in 1–2 days». Specifics beat template phrases in the snippet every time.

The main rule for both tags: no duplicates. If thirty pages share the title «Buy a product in our online store», Google will pick one and ignore the rest. In Turboshop the title, H1, description and keywords are set individually for every page — this is described on the platform SEO features page.

H1 and the description copy

The H1 is the product name, one per page. No «buy», no store name, no city — all of those belong in the title tag. The H1 must answer «what is this product» as precisely as possible: brand, model, and the key attribute that separates it from neighbouring variants (colour, capacity, size, power).

The description is where most stores lose. Text copied from the supplier sits on dozens of sites, and a search engine has no reason to show yours. What works instead:

  • A description in the store's own voice. Who the product suits, in which scenarios it works well, how it differs from neighbouring models in your own catalogue.
  • Answers to real customer questions. Collect the questions from chats and phone calls and close them right in the description. These double as ready-made passages for AI search, which favours direct, short answers.
  • Sizing and selection help. How to choose the size, configuration or compatibility — this is exactly where buyers hesitate most.
  • Structure. Subheadings, short paragraphs, lists. A solid wall of text is neither read nor indexed well as a set of passages.

The right length depends on competition: a rare part number needs a few solid paragraphs, while a competitive model fought over by dozens of stores deserves 300 words or more of original copy. But length is never the goal in itself: 200 words of substance beat 800 words of filler.

Clean URLs

A good product URL is short and human-readable: /nike-air-max-90-sneakers, not /product?id=4817. Build the slug from the product name, without technical parameters and without unnecessary nesting. If you rename a product, redirect the old URL with a 301 — otherwise you lose the accumulated authority of the page and leave a 404 in the search results.

Images and alt text

Photos sell the product — that much is obvious. Less obvious is that photos also bring traffic: image search is a real channel for many niches (clothing, furniture, decor). Three things make it work.

Alt text. Every photo gets an alt attribute with the product name and a description of what is shown: «Nike Air Max 90 men's sneakers in white, side view». Not a comma-separated list of keywords but a normal phrase — it helps accessibility and search engines understand it better.

File size. Compress images before uploading and use modern formats. A slow product page loses both rankings and buyers, especially on mobile connections.

Meaningful file names. nike-air-max-90-white.jpg instead of IMG_20260719_004.jpg — a small thing that adds one more relevance signal.

Specifications and filters as content

The specifications table is an underrated SEO asset. First, buyers read it more often than the description: they came for specific parameters. Second, specifications are ready-made answers to qualified queries («laptop with 16 GB of RAM», «washing machine 40 cm deep»). Third, catalogue filters are built from specifications, and filtered pages can become landing pages of their own for low-volume queries.

Practical rules: fill in the specifications completely, not just «the main three»; use identical parameter names across a category, otherwise filters fall apart; do not leave empty values — «not applicable» is better than a dash. Empty specifications are one of the most common reasons a product page looks unfinished, both to a buyer and to an algorithm.

Reviews

Reviews play three roles on a product page at once. They remove the buyer's doubts before purchase, they generate free unique content in natural wording you would never invent yourself, and they provide the basis for rating stars in search results via structured data.

The typical beginner's problem is simply having no reviews, because nobody asks for them. A working minimum: an automatic email a few days after delivery asking the buyer to rate the product, the ability to ask a question right on the page, and a public reply from the store to every review — including negative ones. A calm, substantive answer to criticism convinces more than a dozen enthusiastic five-star ratings.

The cheapest unique content in a store is written by its customers. The only question is whether you asked them for it.

Product cards in search results with rating stars and price — structured data in action

Product structured data

Schema.org Product markup, together with nested Offer and AggregateRating, hands the search engine structured data: name, brand, price, currency, availability and rating. This is what puts review stars and the price into the snippet — and such a result wins noticeably on click-through rate against neighbours without markup, even one position lower.

One important condition: the data in the markup must match what the buyer sees on the page. A price in the markup that differs from the price on the page is an error search engines detect, and they may stop showing the rich snippet altogether. On Turboshop product markup is generated automatically — there is nothing to mark up by hand.

Internal links to related products

A product page must not be a dead end. The minimum linking scheme looks like this:

  1. Breadcrumbs up to the category and subcategory — they pass authority both ways and help the search engine understand the catalogue structure.
  2. Similar products — other models of the same type the buyer is comparing anyway.
  3. «Frequently bought together» — accessories and companion items: internal linking plus a higher average order value.
  4. Other variants — colours, capacities and sizes of the same model.
  5. Links from blog articles — reviews and roundups where the product is mentioned.

The minimum rule: at least two links should point to every product page — one from its category and one contextual. A page reachable only through the sitemap is indexed slowly and ranks poorly.

Cheat sheet: page elements, what to write, and the usual mistake

ElementWhat to writeUsual mistake
TitleBrand + model + attribute + «buy», up to ~60 charactersOne template across the whole catalogue
Description150–160 characters: availability, benefit, delivery, call to action«Wide range and low prices» on every page
H1Full product name, one per pageH1 identical to the title, or several H1s
Description copyOriginal text: who it suits, how it differs, how to chooseSupplier copy shared with dozens of sites
ImagesSeveral angles, alt text with the product name, compressed filesOne photo without alt text weighing several megabytes
SpecificationsAll parameters, consistent names across the categoryAn empty table, or three fields out of ten
ReviewsRequest reviews by email, reply to every oneA review block that has stayed empty for years
Product markupName, price, currency, availability, ratingMarkup data that disagrees with the visible price

Common mistakes that kill product page rankings

  • Duplicated supplier descriptions. The most widespread problem. Start rewriting with your top 50 products by demand — redoing the whole catalogue at once is unrealistic, and the top gives most of the effect.
  • Empty specifications. The price list was imported but attributes were never mapped — and the page loses both filters and long-tail queries.
  • Out-of-stock products with no alternatives. Do not delete the page: keep it, state the status honestly and show similar models, otherwise you lose both traffic and authority.
  • Variants as separate near-duplicates. Ten colours of one model as ten nearly identical pages is internal competition. Either merge variants into one page or make the copy genuinely different.
  • A single supplier photo. A page without original photography loses on trust and never appears in image search.
  • Ignoring the mobile view. Check the page on a phone: that is where most buyers make their decision.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should a product description have?

There is no universal number. A rare item with low competition needs a few substantive paragraphs. A competitive model fought over by dozens of stores deserves 300 words or more of original copy answering real customer questions. The real criterion is whether the description closes every doubt before purchase.

Can I use the supplier's description?

As a draft, yes; as the final text, no. That description already sits on dozens of sites and makes your page one of many identical ones. The minimum work: rewrite the first paragraph in your own words, add a «who it suits» block and answers to customer questions. Even that already sets the page apart.

What should I do with out-of-stock products?

Do not delete the page. Keep it accessible, state the status honestly, show an expected restock date and immediately offer similar models. If the product is discontinued for good, 301-redirect it to the closest equivalent or to the category.

Which of this does the platform do automatically?

The technical part: clean URLs, separate meta tag fields for every page, Product structured data, the sitemap and correct mobile rendering. The substance — your own description, specifications, photography and review work — always stays with the store owner, because that is exactly what differentiates you.

Summary

Product page SEO is not one action but a dozen small decisions: an accurate title, an honest description, original copy, complete specifications, images with alt text, reviews, structured data and internal links. Individually each gives little; together they push the page to the top of the long tail — the cheapest and most convertible traffic a store has.

The platform takes the technical part off your hands so you can spend your time on substance. Look through the full feature list, check the terms on the pricing page — or simply create a store for free
